In Belgium, this is the Feast Day of St. Hubert, the patron saint of hunters. Today kicks off the hunting season. This is appropriate since in some cultures November's Full Moon is known as the Hunter's Moon, a critical time when meat was prepared for winter use. As the frosts darken the fields, and the November wind whistles down the chimney, why not invite friends for a hunter's feast or potluck? Before your guests arrive, mix a pinch each of ground walnuts, nutmeg, and sage. Sprinkle this on your front doorstep and in each kitchen corner while saying:

Protect this home and those within
from winter's grief
so we may savor this feast.

Serve foods such as meat, bread, white and sweet potatoes, and wine. For dessert, serve gingerbread or apple pie.
