Many Pagans belong to the Unitarian Universalist (UU) church, known for its open-door policy to seekers of all persuasions. The UU church devotes part of its weekly service to "joys and sorrows," a time for participants to reflect on their lives and those of their families and communities.
Set aside time on the first Friday of each month for your own joys and sorrows. Work at your ancestor altar, or light a candle. Begin by speaking aloud the names of your beloved dead, honoring them. Next, speak aloud your sorrows. What difficulties or challenges are in your life right now, or in the lives of your loved ones? Give voice to these and, if you wish, appeal to your own deities and partrons for assistance.
Finally, speak aloud your joys, hopes, and dreams, pondering the wealth of your life for some time before offering thanks and extinguishing the candle.
