White Lotus Day

Color of the day:  White
Incense of the day:  Alder

It's White Lotus Day, a day celebrated worldwide by theosophists in commemoration of the death of noted theosophist Helena Petrovna Blavatsky in 1891. Theosophy is a philosophical system that finds links between nature, divinity, and enlightenment. On May 8th, theosophists meditate on the metaphor of the lotus, a flower that emerges from mud, grows through water, and emerges into the glory of air and sun, symbolizing spiritual accomplishment. The lotus is believed to represent the four elements in pure form, and it is a thing of perfect beauty besides.
Find a simple image of a lotus in a book or on the Web. With paper and pencil, draw the lotus's shape and then reflect, tracing the lines repeatedly as you consider how the lotus applies to you. What "mud" must you find your way through in order to emerge into the light of day? Contemplate the lotus and gather strength.
