Fire Starter

Color of the day:  Silver
Incense of the day:  Rosemary

Festival season approaches! Learning to start outdoor fires "magickally" is fun and will put you in demand for rituals, festivals, and other gatherings.

Visit your local outdoor recreation store and purchase a two-piece fire-starter set. One piece is held steady while the other (the "striker") is struck sharply against the stable piece, creating sparks. The sparks then fall onto some sort of highly combustible material and voilĂ -fire!

Most fire starters are the traditional flint and steel. Some replace the flint component with magnesium, which yields extra-hot sparks. Practice (outdoors!) until you can create a reliable shower of sparks. Then create a pile of quick-start material to catch the sparks: fatwood shavings, shreds of newspaper, or laundry lint (from your dryer) work very well. Rehearse until you can light fire with one strike. For effect, say as you strike:

Prometheus, gift us with fire!
