The Power of Freewriting

Color of the day:  Indigo
Incense of the day:  Pine

Did you know that a certain kind of writing can access the creative parts of your brain as well as forgotten or hidden memories? Welcome to freewriting! Use this when wrestling with a problem or before divination or magical practices.

You'll need paper, a pen or pencil, and mint tea or candy. Before beginning, focus on your problem, issue, or desire and condense it into one or two words; this is your "prompt."

Sip the tea or chew the candy to heighten your senses. Begin writing in response to your prompt. Don't worry about writing perfectly, and don't stop to correct or edit. Just write whatever comes to mind, even single words. Keep the pencil moving, even if you hit a temporary block. Doodle, draw squiggly lines, or do whatever keeps the pencil moving on the paper—this is important. Continue freewriting until you feel done, then stop and read what you wrote. Consider how the words respond to your prompt: you may be surprised.
