Better Yourself with the Moon’s Help

Moon at Night During Road Trip

Are you on a quest for self-improvement? Perhaps you're trying to become more mindful, eat more nourishing food, move your body more, or deepen your spiritual connections. Believe it or not, the Moon can help you in this work!

From an astrological perspective, since the Moon is the celestial body closest to Earth, its positioning is most closely correlated with our day-to-day lives. By being aware of and aligning your efforts with the current phase and sign of the Moon, you can help increase the odds that your self-improvement endeavors will be successful. Think of it as timing your work to flow with the current of the universe rather than struggling against it.

Moon Phases
The Moon's phases can be summed up simply:

  • Waxing to Full Moon: Best for increasing or adding things to your life
  • Waning to New Moon: Best for decreasing or removing things from your life

For brevity's sake, I'm simply going to refer to waxing and waning Moons in this article, but you can mentally include full with waxing and new with waning.

Moon Signs
In addition to the Moon’s current phase, the Moon's current astrological sign can also help you time your work. As the Moon passes through every astrological sign each month, you have regular unique opportunities to add a bit of astrological juice to any goals you may be interested in pursuing for yourself.

If you're trying to figure out the best time to start something, consult the Moon's phase and sign to see when your efforts will best match the flow of the universe. Here are some ideas, but don't limit yourself to just the examples that follow. Once you have an idea of what each sign and phase is best for, you can make other connections as well.

Moon in Aries
Aries is the first sign in the wheel of the zodiac, and it's a fire sign. It's great for new beginnings. Its energy is springlike, courageous, and fiery.

  • Launch a new, short-term project: When something needs a quick push or a big splash, a waxing Moon in Aries has you covered.
  • Energize a languishing effort: If you've got a project that's stalled out and you have an idea for how to kickstart it back into gear, time that work to when the Moon is waxing in Aries.
  • Get out of a bad situation quickly: If you need to make a hasty retreat and have the luxury of picking your moment, try doing so when the Moon is waning in Aries.

Moon in Taurus
Taurus is an earth sign and is great for slowing down, enjoying sensual pleasures, and focusing on efforts that require slow and steady growth.

  • Focus on self-care: Taurus Moons are great for spa days, massages, acupuncture, a sauna session, or any activity that makes your body feel good, regardless of the Moon's phase.
  • Plant a garden: Nothing says, "slow and steady growth" like planting and tending literal seeds or plants, especially if the Moon is waxing.
  • Take up a new instrument: If you'd like to learn a new musical instrument, a waxing Moon in Taurus is great for the slow and steady energy needed to practice, practice, practice!

Moon in Gemini
Airy Gemini is like your fast-walking, fast-talking pal who loves to laugh, play, and travel the world. It's great for any endeavors requiring communication, marketing, or going someplace new.

  • Start an advertising or PR campaign: If you're trying to boost your business, a waxing Moon in Gemini is a great time to launch any kind of communications-based campaign around it. It's also a great time for sending e-newsletters and other communications.
  • Make travel plans: If visiting new places is on your bucket list, the waxing Gemini Moon is a great time to book your tickets.
  • Have the hard conversation: If you've been putting off a tough but important conversation because you've struggled to find the right words, a waning Moon in Gemini is great for finally clearing the air.

Moon in Cancer
Matters of the heart and hearth are front and center when the Moon is in watery Cancer. It's a great time for working through emotional problems and taking care of your home.

  • Clean and declutter: That "big clean" of your home you try to do a few times a year but keep putting off? (You know, the one where you finally wash the windows and the baseboards?) Put it on your calendar when the Moon is in Cancer in any phase.
  • Have a heart-to-heart: If you've got big feelings you haven't been able to express, or if someone important in your life seems like they need to talk about something emotional, make an appointment to talk when the Moon is in Cancer. Depending on the nature of the emotion, if you have the luxury of time, you can determine if a waxing or waning Moon will be optimal.
  • Work on your mental health: If you have been putting off starting therapy, spend some time when the Moon is in Cancer finding a therapist, or, if you can, book your first appointment for a day when the Moon is in Cancer. It'll be easier to express and identify your feelings, regardless of Moon phase.

Moon in Leo
Leo brings us back to the element of fire. Leo is bombastic, confident, and creative. Like Aries, it's great for starting things off, but it's a bit more ideal than Aries for events requiring ongoing passion and energy.

  • Make something: This is a great Moon for getting in touch with your creative side. Try an art class to do in person or find a tutorial online to do on your own. If it's just for your own delight, don't worry about the Moon phase. But if you're making something you're planning to sell, a waxing Moon is best.
  • Ask for a raise or a promotion: Leo is great for getting recognition for achievements. If you're looking for the right day to try and get ahead in your career, a waxing Leo Moon would be ideal.
  • Start a long-term creative project: If you've got a project in mind that's going to require long-term inspiration and passion, a waxing Moon in Leo is a great time to get it going.

Moon in Virgo
There are so many great self-improvement opportunities with an earthy Virgo Moon, I had trouble narrowing this list down to just three! This Moon is all about attention to detail, completing projects, and tending to your health.

  • Start a new healthy habit: A waxing Virgo Moon is ideal for starting a new workout routine or developing a healthier eating plan.
  • Break an unhealthy habit: Waning Virgo Moons can help you break out of an unhealthy rut. Look to this sign for quitting smoking or decreasing the amount of time you spend doomscrolling.
  • Create or revise your budget: Virgo's attention to detail will help you ensure nothing major gets missed. Any Moon phase works here.

Moon in Libra
The airy scales of Libra are all about balance, diplomacy, partnerships, and contracts. Social justice work is also favored when the Moon is in Libra.

  • Get your end-of-life documents in order: If you've been procrastinating getting your will, advance directive, powers of attorney, or other documents sorted, a Libra Moon is your friend. If you're getting them set up for the first time, a waxing Moon is best. For updates, any phase works.
  • Start a joint venture: If you're starting a new business or organization that involves other people, a waxing Libra Moon can bring balance to those relationships and start things off on the right foot.
  • Call your local representatives about a social justice issue: It's never a bad time to do this, but the Libra Moon in any phase will help increase the odds your voice will be heard.

Moon in Scorpio
Scorpio, a water sign, is known for being mysterious, which may make it seem like a poor choice for any personal improvement task, but it's great for investigating problems and for ending and transforming things that are holding you back.

  • Chase down the source of an issue: If you've been putting off making a series of phone calls to figure out what went wrong with something, a Scorpio Moon will help you get resolution. Any phase works fine.
  • End a relationship: If you've been waiting to end a relationship that isn't working out, a waning Scorpio Moon can help give you the right push to do the hard but necessary thing.
  • Shift your perspective: If you are trying to better understand how others view the world, a Scorpio Moon might be a great time to read or watch something written by someone with a very different perspective than your own. Any Moon phase works for this.

Moon in Sagittarius
Fiery Sagittarius is great for trying new things and expanding your horizons. Travel, sports, learning, and philosophy are all favored by this sign.

  • Start a new learning quest: Download an app to learn a new language, or sign up for a community education course when the Moon is waxing in Sagittarius.
  • Take up a new sport or exercise routine: If you are trying to find fun new ways to move your body, a Moon in Sagittarius (any phase) is great timing, especially if you're joining a social physical activity.
  • Make time for laughter: Laughter is healthy for the body and the soul. Take in a comedy show or watch a favorite funny movie when the Moon is in Sagittarius. Any phase is fine.

Moon in Capricorn
Capricorn is pictured as a sea goat, and like a goat, it is doggedly determined and stubborn. As an earth sign, it's great for planning and organization.

  • Reorganize your space: Capricorn's groundedness and determination can really help you hit your stride with a reorganization project! If you're adding new furniture or systems to help keep things in order, a waxing Moon is ideal; if you're getting rid of stuff, try for a waning Moon.
  • Create a five-year plan: If you'd like to set some long-term personal goals, Capricorn can help you create a realistic but ambitious plan. A waxing Moon is ideal.
  • Do some networking: This is a great sign for making and reinforcing connections that will benefit your career. Get out to a networking event, or reach out to former colleagues online to check in the next time the Moon is waxing in Capricorn.

Moon in Aquarius
The dreamy, optimistic song "Aquarius/Let the Sunshine In" by The 5th Dimension fits the vibe of airy Aquarius so well. Aquarius Moons are great for work geared toward creating a better future, bonding with your teammates, and trying new things.

  • Hold a brainstorming session: If you need some fresh ideas to move things forward, whether in your personal life or at work, gather some folks to talk it through. You may be surprised what unfolds! Choose the ideal Moon phase based on the type of solution you're aiming for.
  • Do some charitable work: Humanitarian efforts are always great to do no matter what the Moon phase, but they are particularly favored for having the best impact when the Moon is in Aquarius. Determine which Moon phase is best based on the type of work you're helping with.
  • Make a commitment to yourself: Aquarius Moons are excellent for setting a goal to create a better future. Write it down and make that commitment when the Moon is waxing.

Moon in Pisces
The final sign in the wheel of the zodiac is Pisces, a water sign. Its vibe is compassionate and receptive.

  • Open up: If you've been keeping people you care about at a distance because you've been hurt in the past, a Moon in Pisces is a good time to drop those walls and reconnect. Either Moon phase works.
  • Listen: Likewise, if there's someone in your life you've been having trouble reaching emotionally, a Moon in Pisces might be an optimal time to try for a proper heart-to-heart conversation to clear the air.
  • Dream: Give yourself permission and time to dream of a better future for yourself and for the world. You can make a difference: The dream is the first step to getting there.

Conclusion
Paying attention to the Moon sign, and timing your personal development tasks appropriately, can make those efforts smoother and easier. Align your efforts with the Moon phase and sign, and watch as the road to your desires opens up.
