Spell: The Quiet Midwinter

Color of the Day
Incense of the Day

January is when "true" winter begins and the weather in the northern regions begins to turn much colder. After a busy holiday season, we want to slow down and hibernate. We can use the quiet, dormant energy of winter to do magical work, tapping into our inner depths to kindle the heat and light of creativity. This can help prevent depression and restlessness from setting in. Getting some exercise and spending time outside is a huge help to prevent seasonal depression, but spellwork can help focus our energy.

Do this working at noon, when the sun is at its zenith. Even if it's not sunny out, look up in the sky and try to sense the sun's position directly above you. Close your eyes and imagine the heat and light of the sun on your face. Let the sun's warmth and power flow over you; visualize yourself outdoors in summer doing this, imagining the sun's intensity. Wrap your arms around yourself to "hold in" the sun's energy, and draw upon this energy when you feel the gloomy dark of winter pressing down.
