Diwali is a two-week long celebration of the Hindu people that teaches people to vanquish ignorance by driving away the darkness that engulfs the light of knowledge. Diwali is a festival of lights, and the word is derived from the Sanskrit words deepa, meaning "light," and avali meaning "row." Set up hanging lamps or as many candles in a row as possible to encourage the presence of Diwali. Welcome Lakshmi, goddess of prosperity, who is linked to this celebration. Lakshmi is embodied by basil, rice, coins, and other symbols of prosperity and fertility. To invoke the blessings of Lakshmi during Diwali infuse one cup basil leaves in four cups of water, and strain. Add one-half teaspoon of peppermint and basil essential oils. Wash floors and walls with Lakshmi's spiritual wash.
