Today is Mincemeat Day. Originally this dish consisted of chopped meat, dried fruit, and copious spices. It used up shreds of meat and it preserved food. Over time, the amount of meat and suet decreased, so modern "mincemeat" may contain none at all, only fruits and other ingredients.
Celebrate this holiday by eating mincemeat, whether you buy a mince pie or make your own from scratch. If you can, choose one with actual meat. This is a way of honoring our ancestors and their ingenuity, which is what makes mincemeat pie traditional at major holidays such as Thanksgiving and Christmas or Yule. Before you cut the pie, take time to bless it: "Scraps of meat and fat and fruit, Frugal dish that's made to suit. From the past to future flow Memories that touch and go Through the sweet that we now see. So eat up, and blessed be!" |
