| A cingulum, in magickal terms, is a cord that encircles one's waist. It may be purely decorative- tied around a robe or tunic-or, more often, it may signify rank or accomplishment. Different traditions suggest different colors for the cord; green is often used for neophytes, and red or black for those of "rank." You can design your own cingulum, using colors appropriate for your own traditions and practices. A traditional length of cord is equal to your own height, or you might prefer a cord of special length, such as nine feet-useful for laying out a magick circle. Always tie the cingulum using a square knot: this four-sided knot is supremely strong and also references the four elements and a sense of symmetry and balance. Use the cingulum to mark steps in your work by braiding in new colors or using intricate knot work. |
